Simple Past

Present Perfect Simple

Signal Words:


         - yesterday
         - Two years ago, 5 months ago, 3 days ago
         - in 1995, in August, last Monday 
         - the other day
         - last year, last month, last week,...

Signal Words:

        - just
       - already
        - ever/never
       - yet/so far
        - since
        - for
        - recently
        - how long

Form:


      - regular verbs: infinitive + -ed
(check spelling rules for –ed)
ex. play- I played

      - irregular verbs: see 2nd column of 
       irregular verbs list.
       ex. eat- I ate

Form:


       - regular verbs: have/has + past participle*
(*like the simple past)
ex. play- I have played

       - irregular verbs: have/has + past participle
(see 3rd column of irregular verbs list)
ex. eat- I have eaten

Use:


- Specific time in the past
ex. I broke my arm in 1993.
(emphasis on the action)

      - Finished actions
We visited London last month.

Use:


      - Time is not important. Action in the past with a result/consequence in the present
ex. I have recently broken my arm.
(emphasis on the result)

      - Experiences until now (unfinished action)
We have visited Rio 3 times.
